Hmm..a little bit of misinformation going on here.Soldier of Fortune - What is your definition of combat? If you are referring to a combination of fast air, attack aviation, artillery bombardment, followed on by sweeping manoevre by armoured and infantry soldiers, etc, etc, than no there really hasn't been that type of "combat" since Korea. If you are refering to lower scale "skirmishes" at the section and platoon level up to an including company than yes Canada has been involved during the 1990's primarily in the Balkans.
The Patriot - I'm not sure where you heard or came up with your answer. ROEs are mission specific orders from the CDS to the Commanders of a mission and passed on to each and every soldier on the ground. In Bosnia (SFOR), soldiers are allowed to use minimum force up to and including deadly force for a variety of situations that are dependent on the alert states. NOTHING prohibits a soldier from using deadly force to defend himself against an attack against himself, his buddies or PDSS. For example, if I'm manning the front gate of a Canadian Camp and a car pulls off the side of the road and starts pumping AK 47 rounds into my bunker, there is nothing stopping me from opening up with my C7, C6, C9, Grizzly, Coyote, etc to neutralize the threat.
Be careful what you say about ROEs. They are very specific and very clear what a soldier can and cannot do given a certain situation.
