Read Desmond Morton's "A Military History of Canada" , he clarifies the $10 000 debt owed by Currie. Also see Berton's Vimy he deals with it as well. Currie proved that one's civilian life doesn't necessarily prevent one from prospering and persevering in military life. And no, he didn't receive his apppointment to command through preferential treatment. Although at one time in his Militia career he served with Garnet Hughes, son of Sam Hughes, this never played a part in his promotions. By the time he was being considered to command 1 Cdn Div he was allready opposed to Sam Hughes and had earned Hughes' emnity. He refused to play the political game which Hughes tried to force upon Canadian Senior staff overseas. In fact Currie was about the only former Liberal Militia CO to gain any significant promotion during the war while Hughes (a Tory) was in power.
He had more integrity than most would under the circumstances. He looked out for the welfare of his men and took extraordinary measures to ensure that his troops received both the training and information necessary to achieve victories.
