Ploughjockey,
The C3 is a decent piece of kit simply because it was
retrofitted on the battle proven C1 chassis. The range is
supposed to be longer but who can tell when most of the
southern Ontario units train in Meaford now. The barrel
is very big and the trails are very heavy compared with
a C1 so it takes more people to manhandle them into postion.
Precious seconds wasted. That brings me to the point of
why we, the Reserve, got them in the first place. The
MLVW as you know is a great truck when it has troops in
the back and that's it. You put 7 guys in the back and
all their kit, food, water, ammo, add gun stores like cam nets,
poles, tents, stores, gun cleaning stores, add a pallette of 105mm
ammo at say 40lbs a round and then fill the bussels under the
bed of the truck with 105mm ammo and you begin to realise
the load placed on these trucks. Now add a heavier gun,
the springtime mud and hills of the training area and night driving
and I'll get to my point. The Reserve batteries could
no longer keep up with the battle so somebody authorized
the purchase of a longer reaching gun so that we wouldn't
have to move as often saving the purchase of new gun tractors
or reconfiguring the Regiments (105mm British light gun
air mobile/droppable with a diesel Hummer and support vehicles)
That's just my educated opinion. In the field they are
outstanding. Very accurate at direct and indirect fire.
Big kick ass muzzle brake that knocks you down if you
stand lateral to it when firing. But again, bigger gun
and that means more work for the engine, brakes, transmission,
and driver when the gun is being towed. I don't know
how many red lights are run because you just can't slow
down from normal speed without losing control on pavement
in emergencies. I like it cause it looks killer. What else
can I look up for you?
