I was a stupid, young (funny how those two words go so well together) Canadian that had been fed the American pap that currently feeds the bulk of Canadian youth and (without thought about the ramifications) went south of the border in 1970, lied about everything (age, place of birth, et al) and got me a job with the US Army. Took the Americans almost four and a half years before they caught up with the bull that I had spread (and pulled me out of an operational theatre to do it), threatened me with Leavenworth (the Federal prison) and cut me loose. A sad and sorry tale, eh? (not really sad or sorry; I would do it different if I had another chance!!).
I resent the remarks that the US military is a group of underachievers that specialize to the extreme. It is with honour and pride that I have served two of the three countries in North America and while both have their respective drawbacks, both have reasons for their successes...their Soldiers.
Don't be stupid...take a long, hard look at what you can do with the gift that you have (that being youth and all that it entails) and THEN go out and make a horses' ass of yourself. At least you will do it with the knowledge that it was an honest try and that you will learn from the experience.
