I know Canadians who have joined the USMC. They all report that everything there is spoonfed to them, and aimed at your basic ghetto slug with a grade 3 education. My understanding, too, is that training is very specialized - you may be trained to drive a tank, for example, but if it breaks down, you won't know how to fix it. Canadian drivers, to continue the example, learn basic maintenance and theory of all the parts of their vehicles before learning to drive them. The same would apply, I suppose, to any other trade anyone might be interested in.

The US forces don't seem to present much of a challenge to your average bright Canadian (never mind the rah rah TV commercials). Bear in mind, this is from someone with no experience in the US military. If I'm wrong, maybe someone can correct me.

As for history books - I presume you mean "Social Studies" which is the perverted form of history they teach in schools these days. Bookstores and public libraries are wonderful things, and you will find many good books on Canadian subjects. Read Pierre Berton's "Vimy", or Farley Mowat's "And No Birds Sang" for starters - then move on to Desmond Mortons' "When Your Number is Up". (If you're interested in WWII uniforms, read MY book...) You have no excuse for not knowing your own country's history. Blaming it on a lack of cable TV or laziness doesn't cut it. If you don't know where to start, well, I just suggested a couple of places. I'm sure the others here could suggest more. (I'll add that you can give The Valour and the Horror a very wide berth).

So basically, if you want to excel amongst a bunch of underachievers you're a lot smarter than, please, join the US Armed Forces. If you want to truly learn a trade, join the CF. And whatever you do, take the time to learn about your own country's history. You owe the guys who died overseas at least that much.
