Jules;
DILEAS is the first word of the gaelic regimental motto DILEAS GU BRATH. It appears in the anulas of the badge of the 48th Highlanders of Canada. Translated it means "Faithful Forever". The motto is taken from the family crest of the first commanding office John I. Davidson.
For those of us who have served in the regiment it is used to denote anything 48th.
Kim Beattie the official historian of the regiment wrote two volumes of its history and simply named them Dileas.
In Vol.II of Dileas in the pre-amble to chapter 49 he describes Dileas much more eloquently than I can:
"Dileas? Why, man that,s the Regiments heart, lungs and guts. It makes us tick. It's why a 48th Highlander fights. It's how he walks and how he behaves. It's how he acts and how he thinks. It's spirit, morale, dicipline, pride. . . anything you like. It's everything, it's the Regiment!"

Now that didn't hurt a bit did it.

Art J.
