Hello Dav; I just read your post and to tell you the honest to God truth, I have no idea why the lower retirement age. I will retire at the ripe old age of 56 with 35 years in my chosen profession of Firefighting. The retirement age for us is mandatory at age 60. Off the cuff, I would hazard a guess that it's a practical age for the military because being that OLD may be a hazard to someone who is still in the thick of things. When I say thick of things I mean a person who is still at the pointy end. If you're a gravel crusher, age could be a detrement to you and to your troops. Not saying you're not in shape .....but. On the adage of Youth and Skill being overcome by Old Age and Treachery, I agree with that to a point. Experience will almost always overcome being young and stupid but eventually those young ones that have half a brain, will pay attention and overtake the old ones with experience. There's always easy ways to do hard things but as we age it gets damn hard to keep as fit as those who have young hormones in their bodies. As far as I'm concerned Dav, the government and the military really screwed up when they made the military go tri-service. They took away esprit de corps, individuality, and the chance to say I was in the senior Regiment, of the senior Corps. That's exactly why I got out. I was in for life but that changed the everything. Sharpp, Human Rights and all the other BS that has come along with these times, in my humble opinion, has just added to the rot of the military in general. Dav, I think you know that this particular subject is like a bee in my bonnet. Anyway, I haven't read any of the other post below yours so maybe somebody has answered your question a lot better than I. Just for your info, I was in the reserves, then the regular forces and then back to the reserves as a senior NCO in an armoured Regiment. Actually armoured in both the reserves and regular Army. That was a long time ago tho'. Old ways are good and new ways are good also...if they don't degrade the military. I was just thinking of a post on this page, that said something about walking across the Parade Square to go to the bathroom and was about wearing combats..I think. Anyway in my time, you would not dare to walk across a Parade Square for fear of having to stand in front of the RSM and getting your rear end reamed out. Now they park on them etc. Another lack of discipline but the young will say what has that to do with soldiering. Ahem. Anyway I must depart as we have company for supper tonight and I must go and get pretty. That takes a very long time anymore, haha. Stay safe.
