Dave;
Along your line of thought. You may or may not know the story of L/Cpl. G.L. McAllister of the 15th Bn CEF (48th Highlanders). Cpl. McAllister was taken prisoner at St.Julien during the first gas attack in April 1915. He was captured and sent to a prisoner of war camp. During his internment he assisted in the escape of 23 British officers. He physically placed himself between the escaping officers and the prison guards and fought them off till the officers escaped. Hec was beaten so badly that when he was released to Holland in 1918 the examining doctor said that he had suffered an astigmatism in his eyesight from blows adminisered to his head.
He was recommended for the Victoria Cross by the escaped British Officer when they reached England. He was awarded The Distinquished Conduct Medal probably the only POW to be so honoured.
In 1923 Cpl. McAllister was invited to a banquet held in his honour in London England by the escaped officers
Where he was presented with an engraved watch by the gratefull officers.Art Johnson
