Had an interesting experience that really demonstrates the 'ridculous' end of training in regards to scenarios. About four years ago I was the Plt WO of a recruit course doing the last field weekend prior to QL3. One of the scenarios that I cooked up was to simulate the use of POWs as shields on a bridge to protect it from assault (similar to what the Bosnians did to our Captain overseas to protect bridges from UN airstrikes). The enemy had a prisoner of ours handcuffed to a bridge. The task was to cross the bridge peacefully if possible or by assault if necessary. The DS were uncomfortable with this scenario but allowed it to proceed. When the negotiations failed to resolve a peaceful crossing, the snipers placed at either flank were ordered to protect the POW from injury...failing that, they were ordered to terminate the prisoner. The prisoner died, the bridge was assaulted and crossed at a zero loss to the assault or consolidation teams and the complete elimination of the opposition. The DS went ballistic!!! They were appalled that I would even consider the elimination of one of our own. I pointed out to them that the task was very specific and that they had allowed the scenario to proceed but that ended the excersize until I was "interviewed" by a professional and satisfied the criteria for 'balanced'. The course proceeded without its' Plt WO for a short time and all was right with the world!!

I find it uncomfortable to belong to an organization that complicates the responsibilities of a POW...to evade capture at all costs, if captured; to attempt escape, to resist prison authority, give no assistance by way of information, confirmation or demonstration and to provide a leadership role for the rest of the troops. The POW surrenders certain rights when he gives himself/herself over to control by the enemy and should expect to give of his/her life if the security of others is compromised.

I would expect nothing less than the above from myself or any of my soldiers...why should I expect anything to the contrary from anyone else?

All the Best
