Another controversy. I love it.
Here's my 3 cents worth. As I have said a few times before in this Diary, my oldest son, son-in-law and 3 "adopted sons", are still in or have been in the military. I have served time in the military along side of my friend Larry. In my day, I was very, very proud to wear the uniform. During our 6 months of Basic Training, not 10 weeks, we changed clothes so many times during the day, we could change clothes whilst sleeping and not get them on wrong. We also had to wear certain clothes to go to the mess to eat. No jeans. Good pants, shirt and a sports coat, if not in the proper uniform. That was when we were at Regiment. Without going into all the details of why we changed clothes so often, the result was DISCIPLINE, being PROUD of the uniform and when we were off base we wore the UNIFORM of the day with pride in ourselves and in the uniform we wore and also with pride in the COUNTRY we served and most of all very, very proud of the Regiment we served in. Having said that and it was abreviated, I had the pleasure of having one of my adopted sons spend a lot of time in this house. He used to hitch hike from Cedar Springs, Ontario to here when he was at the rifle range with his party of snipers. He would be dressed in combats. I know about combats because I was still in when they first came into being. Anyway, the first time he came here wearing combats I was shocked. I was surprised that he was allowed off base wearing them to begin with and very surprised that he would even go off base with them on because they had holes in them. I thought that as a civilian, that the uniform looked terrible. I told him that also, so I'm not talking behind his back. Now if I felt that way, what would the people that picked him up while he was hitchhiking think? What would they think of him as a soldier representing this country of ours and what would they think of the Regiment he was in!!! I have spent time on miltary bases over the last 8 years or so and when I see a parade where there are two Generals on parade and the dress is combats, it makes me wonder. The pomp and ceremony is sometimes a pain in the butt, but wearing a dress uniform, be it our old battledress, TWs, or DEUs, I think that's right, as far as I'm concerned shows DISCIPLINE and PRIDE in oneself and the Regiment to which you belong. Thats probably the thing that galls me the most about this present day military, the lack of discipline and the lack of being able to discipline without finding yourself on charge for harassment or something idiotic like that. Boy Scouts you aint and you should be treated as the trained killers that you're supposed to be. Peacekeepers when the time comes but ready to do battle without being handed a gilt edged request. There I go on a tangent. As far as wearing a Lanyard goes, we always wore our Lanyards with dress uniforms. The Lanyard was the colors of our Regiment. This is just another example of the Generals and politicians allowing our military to be downgraded even more. Maybe I should say degraded. So now you have about four and a half cents worth. I'd like to give about a quarter's worth but.......
