Part of the Canadian Forces Liaison Council's mandate is to encourage employers to give time off to their reservist-employee for military service, and to facilitate employers who wish to hire reservists. If any reservists out there would like assistance with regard to employer support issues we can help.
Each reserve unit has an Employer support rep, each province has a CFLC Liaison Officer (ont has 4, Que has 3), or you may call 1-800-567-9908 to the secretariat in Ottawa.
With regard to the issue of mandatory time off, in my opinion the best way to go is voluntary support for voluntary service. Sell your reserve training to your employer, when you go on course or exercise you develop skills that make you a better employee. Skills such as trades training, leadership, planning, management, effective communication, decision making etc are all skills developed through military training that do not turn off once you take off the uniform, they are there and they benefit your employer.
Check out our web page. Feel free ot email or call me either through our 1-800 line or 613-995-5744.
