The absence of readily available info on this vehicle is an ongoing problem. It is a significant advance in AFV technology for the Canadian Army, but the Army has not been proactive in educating all its personnel and the public of its capabilities and its importance to the Army.
Firstly, the LAV Gen III is an infantry vehicle. It will be used by the RCR, the PPCLI and the R22eR, replacing the GRIZZLY and M113 APCs now in use.
>1)How many units are currently training on/using these vehicles operationaly right now?
AS of yet, the first user trial has not commenced. This user trial will start summer 1999, using a composite company of all three regular regiments. The trial cannot start, of course, until enough of the vehicles are built by Diesel Division General Motors whose plant in London, Ontario, is busily assembling the first production models now.
>2)I heard rumours that for some reason the new recruits out of armour training would be undertaking training on these models. I heard that the point was something
like 'the veterans wont be around forever, so train the new guys on the new vehicles which they will be using' (sound like bs to me, you would think it would work the
opposite way..but Im clueless)
Initial training focus will be with the existing infantry battalion personnel.
>3)What units within Canada are currently equipped with the Gen's?
No one has them yet. I'm not sure what the order of march for units to receive them is.
>4)And finally, for any of you armour crewmen out there. What are your experiences and or thoughts about them?
Dead end question there. :)
Try my article at http://members.tripod.com/~RegimentalRogue/rogue.htm for my own initial comments regarding the advent of the LAV Gen III.
Good luck.
