It's all about image. Regardless of the fact that Canadian soldiers have always been confined by the limits of human capabilities, just like Germans, Americans, Britons, etc, they once projected an image that they were something special on the field of battle. If WW1 history has taught me anything, it's that by 1918, the mere notion that they might be opposite the Canadian corps was enough to make any veteran Hun cringe. Sure, HQ might have planned the creeping barrage, and borrowed extra guns, and planned all the movements, but sitting in a trench, all Fritz could really know was that something really unpleasant was about to happen.

Was he thinking "Mein gott, doz Canadian generals always plan de best offensivez!"?

Or was it more like "Ach, scheiss! Canadians [in general]!"?

I mean, I don't want to sound like a know-it-all here, but I'd suspect the latter to be true. The Germans weren't facing the Brigadiers or the Corps Quartermasters or whatever, they were facing the average grunt, and he was the one that always won.

But look at the image our soldiers have now. At the instigation of Ottawa, they've become a helpful, kind, caring, overall "nice" bunch of guys. They're the world's babysitters, waving a disapproving finger at whoever's causing trouble in Europe or Africa. "No no no," says Johnny Canuck "you people play nice or I'm going to have to seperate you!". It's enough to turn the stomach.

Now, you and I both know that this image is false. Frankly, it disgusts me. It's an insult to Canadian service men and women everywhere. But hey, it fits the PC bill and keeps the Liberals in power, so it's gotta be doing someone some good, right? Right?

Just my opinion, but I've seen a slide in this country's self-confidence and esteem on the whole, and the military has taken it's share of the problem.
