The point of having a Reserve force is to impart a general knowledge of soldier skills on a large number of troops, so that when they go on operations, they can develop those skills with further training. The Reserves are not a Rapid Deployment Force.

The point you don't understand, is that no reservist goes on operations without a workup period (or shouldn't - and the same goes for the Regular Force). During that work up period, the fit are weeded from the unfit, and all soldier skills are reassessed and improved upon. That is the time to be picky - to bitch and moan that Wedndesday night soldiers aren't as fit as full time infantrymen is just plain silly. Why on earth would they have to be? If they ever go on operations they will have six months to sort themselves out before they go.
