I guess no-one else is going to take the bait, so I will. The debate here in Canada boils down to this: if women can do it let them. I guess I might agree if it was really as simple as that. First of all I don't think women are built, physically or mentally to cope with life as an Infantryman. Maybe its societal or maybe its evolutional, I don't know. In fact it really doesn't matter, the implication of an article like the one you posted is that standards are being altered to ensure that women can participate alongside men in the name of equality or fairness or whatever. Here in Canada we chose not to employ a double standard in terms of physical fitness, instead we lowered the standard enough so that ANYONE could get by. I don't know if it was intentionally done to accomodate women but I do know it has not only led to more women in the infantry but has led to even more unfit (in all senses of the word) men. Another offshoot is that it has made many believe that the current standards are realistic and in so doing have proven their point that women can equally participate and the infantry is no big deal.To make a long story short, having low standards makes a lot of people happy but heaven forbid we actually need to call on the Army to mobilize there may be a lot of long faces.
