I wouldn't say that the British ammo was of low standard; rather, Canadian ammunition was of too HIGH a standard than would be expected of a service rifle. British Mk VII .30 Ball served in two world wars as both rifle and machine gun ammunition and served King and Empire well. The Canadian Rifle and ammo were just too prissy for the conditions of the front line.
