I don't see why the CF's are so into replacing the Leo with a LAV with a 105mm turret. The US Marine Corps in the late 80's early 90's experimented with a low pressure 105 on the LAV 8x8 chassis and found that it was too unstable a platform to use given the recoil of the gun, and the high center of gravity that putting such a turret upon a LAV type vehicle, anyone with any experience with a Cougar AVGP can attest to this. I have heard that the CF's are considering at least 2 options for such a LAV based vehicle. The first of which is the General Dynamics 105mm low profile turret...In this system, the gun and automatic loading system are turretless, as the gunner and veh. commander are seated beneath the weapons system within the vehicle hull. The second option is the United Defense 105 mm low pressure turret that was to be fitted on the now defunct M8 Armored Gun System...This is a conventional turret, which includes an auto-loader mechanism for the gun. What I cannot understand is when the CF's were conducting the AVGP program back in the 70's...why weren't the Cougar/Grizzly/Husky built with an 8x8 chassis instead of a 6x6. If an 8x8 had been selected, much of the current mobility problems experienced with these vehicles would have been circumvented, and the possibility of upgrading/upgunning/uparmouring the vehicles as time went on would have been a real possibility...just another example of the CF White Elephant program.
