Another death nell for the Merchant Marine veterans that have been denied a stipend similar to their uniformed brethern from the 2nd World War. Our darling Government (may they receive their just rewards in Hell) has slammed the Merchant Marine in the old 'cojones' for having the temerity to ask for what is rightfully theirs as a small reward for supplying the troops, war material and support to the war machine in Europe and Russia. The Government of Canada has suggested that if they award a pension to the few surviving members of the Merchant Marine that gave voluntarily of their lives so that WW2 could come to a swifter end, they would have to provide for the surviving workers of plants like Inglis. The Merchant Marine did not observe too many of the factory workers standing the watch, dodging torpedoes, mines and German U-Boats in the North Atlantic during the convoys to Murmansk!

Like anything else that is 'uncomfortable' for our government to deal with, they whitewash the problem and hope it dies out from its' own lack of support. A few more years and there will be no survivors left...what does that make of you and me?

I believe that if we fail to take this task to the right people or use our time effectively, a letter writing campaign to our members of parliament may be enough to push the sods in Ottawa to have another look at things. They are, after all, counting on the fact that we as most Canadians are complacent to anything that does not directly affect "us". Let's show them otherwise.

Leadership by example
Know your soldiers and promote their welfare
Seek and accept responsibility

All the above attributes have been over looked by the people that have very short memories.

We say a few prayers for the ones that have gone before us but what of the ones that are left?

Honour them, Respect them, Care about them.
