The British infantry used to have 44 men in a formation.
Thus for an NCO to know his current strength he would
tie a knot in eash tassle thread to signify an 'empty
spot' By counting the number of knoted threads in his
sash he would know how many men he had left. I may be
wrong about the number but I am confident that this
is the reason of the sash. The reason I learned as an
RSM in the 48th Highlanders Cadets.
