The Infantry Sash

I am presently looking for some information on the infantry sash.I am serving with the Royal Canadian Regiment and I can't quite seem to get my hands on any reference material about the sash. Some of the questions in particular are:
1. The importance of the sash and its colour;
2. Is there any significance to the number of tassles;
3. Are there any traditions to wearing it in the mess and if so, does it vary between infantry regiments.
