The grunt image is from one of the cartoons in Bill Mauldin's 1944 book "Up Front," page 150 in my 1945 edition. It may be an American GI, but its message seems applicable to all soldiers, that wearisome tolerance of conditions beyond your control (the rain), probably following a long meaningless day of "hurry up and wait" at the hands of indifferent commanders.
