I totally agree with you, I love the ceremonies and "pomp" I think it's what separates us from organisations like the mounties. We have traditions that go back hundreds of years. It's just too bad that we can't retain the real reason for the Army while keeping with tradition.

And no, the only real requirement for a bandie is musical ability. If they are struggling with QL2 then there is always an interested officer that is willing to step in to say " thats my star cymbal player you can't fail them." I have been witness to this and it's not second hand B/S that some people would like you to believe.
