I have briefly read your debates. I have an unrelated question but it does regard Merchant Marines vs Navy. My son is seeking a nomination for both the Naval Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy. My husband is discouraging the nomination to the Merchant Marines because he thinks it will be a horrible lifestyle. To quote him, "The Merchant Marines are a bunch of teamsters and vagabonds". He thinks the officers are respectable but the people they have to deal with are not. I think he is being extremely narrow minded but I really do not have a clue. I would appreciate any input or thoughts on this matter. My son is not looking for lifelong sea duty, he wants to be close to his family when he has one. However, he recognizes the potential of an Academy education and thinks he will have many career opportunities.
