I have had a rather recent occurence that may be of relevance to this topic. On October 31st, the 32nd CBG held a "Freedom of the City" parade in downtown Toronto. By order of the Brigade Commander, each unit was to provide a 50 man guard. This worked out to be approximately 600 soldiers on parade. The idea was great, 32 CBG was the first brigade in Canada to ever have the freedom of the city conferred upon it by a city. Unfortunately there was little to none in the way of PR. The locals had no clue as to what was going on and many of the soldiers (including myself) felt it to be a wasted exercise. The brigade dished out full days pay to each of those soldiers, not to mention paying for off-duty police to close down roads. This parade was a phenomenal waste of money. It could have been 100% more effective simply with the release of press packages and promo's to the press. I personally spent 4 hours on parade, and saw only a few partly interested civilians. We did manage to get Mayor Mel Lastman to come out and declare the freedom to our brigade, but that was about it. I am whole heartedly behind removing some of the pomp that exists in our military.
