You're right!

The badge of the infantry branch (alas it was the badge of the corps)is the crossed rifles etc. as I described, with the motto Ducimus. The Infantry school uses a single large gold coloured maple leaf with a bayonet superimposed and the motto ducimus. I always thought of it more as a camp flag, because I always saw it on the infantry colours background (four square checkerboard of red & white). I forgot about those little pocket badges!

All regular force infantry in training (Officers and NCMs) wear the infantry cap badge however. The CF badge is worn until general military training (QL2) is completed. The infantry badge is then worn throughout infantry (QL3) training. Upon completion, the infanteers are presented with their regimental cap badge (RCR, PPCLI or R22ER).

Reserve Officers in training usually wear their regimental cap badge from their start. Reserve NCMs seem to wear different badges in training based on their Regimental Standing Orders. These soldiers sometimes wear the CF badge until QL3 is complete and then go straight to their regimental badge. Other Reserve units allow their cap badge worn during QL3 training. I'm not sure if any wear the Infantry cap badge during training.
