I haven't completed an analysis. This is just an opinion but, I don't think we spend a very large percentage of our budget on pomp and ceremony. We have gotten rid of most of our bands over the years. I'm not even sure what we have left. It has been so long since I have attended a formal parade with a full band. There are bands out there such as the RCR Pipes and Drums, but they are not supposed to be exclusively pipers and drummers, they have other roles to play as well.
I believe that some of the problems that the Canadian Military has, we owe to our remoteness from the civilian population. We have not done a very good job of public relations for decades. We are now, and have been reaping the unfortunate results of this lack of knowledge by "Joe Citizen".
Bands with the pomp and ceremony are great "PR". Lord knows we need good PR.
I understand the economics, I would rather have an extra bayonet in the field then a tuba player, but that musician is not a waste of money. There is a place and for pomp and ceremony as long as it is not done in excess. Everything in moderation. Unfortunately, I am not as articulate as some of the regular contributers, but these are my comments, thanks
